Mixed Media Workshop

14-15 October 2017 – 9.30am – 4pm (tbc)
County Wicklow

In this 2 day class we will be creating four items plus some small practice drawings.  We will be using collage and watersoluble media.  I will walk you through my step by step process of creating each piece.  I will provide drawing instruction sheets to help you with sketching your girls faces.  This is a beginner class however some basic drawing experience will be useful.  These are simple techniques using water soluble markers, pencils and paints that are quick and easy to use.

Below are the supplies you will need to bring to this workshop.  It looks like a lot, however I have tried to keep it minimal, you should fit all of this in a smallish bag 🙂

  • Matte gel medium (liquitex or similar – If you can, get the Liquitex it is far superior for drawing on than any others I have tried)
  • White gesso
  • Watersoluble media – either of the following will work for this class  (you do not need all of them!)  We will mostly be using earthy tones so you can get away with about 6 colours – browns, yellows and greens.  (Tombow or winsor & newtons are the best, as well as the Inktense – watercolour pencils and Neocolour are not as intense in colour but will still work)
    • tombow waterbased markers
    • winsor & newton watercolour markers
    • Inktense blocks (or pencils)
    • watercolour pencils
    • neocolor/lyra watersoluble crayons
  • Watersoluble Graphite pencils – Derwent watersoluble graphite pencils medium and dark wash (you could also use Lyra or Faber Castel watersoluble graphite pencils/crayons)
  • Graphite pencil 8b (Mars Lumograph is the best you can get, highly recommend them)
  • Old book or novel (to cover with collage) Any kind of book will do, from a thrift store etc, about A5 in size, or a bit larger.
  • Medium and large round watercolour brush
  • Paint brush for collaging – flat about 1 inch
  • Old credit card or plastic scraper to smooth collage papers
  • Brayer (optional, you can get by without this)
  • Acrylic paint (4 colours) –  raw umber (or a dark brown), yellow ochure, white and a buff/cream (I use Jo Sonja Raw umber, Smoked Pearl and Titanium. White, yellow ochre)
  • White soft pastel (or white charcoal)
  • Assortment of stencils and sponge applicator or brush (script writing, large alphabet, and some all over general patterns.  I will have mine there you can borrow those if you need to)
  • Fineline applicator or needle tip bottle with white paint, or white paint pen
  • Rubber alphabet stamps and black ink pad, – or words to cut out (either of these will work, depends on whether you want to stamp you own words or cut them out and stick on)
  • Texture or modelling paste
  • Two canvas boards/panels 30x30cm (12×12″) for the two girl artworks
  • Satin finish spray sealer – Krylon or similar (optional)
  • Paper for your signatures –  4 x A4 watercolour sheets and 4 x A4 scrapbook paper sheets, these will be folded in half to make an approximate A5 size journal
  • String or cord 2 x 120cm long lengths and 1 x 30cm long length (I use hemp cord, you could use twine or any string you like)
  • Sharp tool or nail to punch the holes in your paper and cover
  • Large sewing or upholsterer’s needle – makes it a little easier to thread the string through the holes and button
  • 1 Large button
  • Assorted small beads (optional)
  • Paint palette
  • Paper towel
  • heat gun

I will provide the following items. If you have any collage papers that you like please bring them to use also, such as butterflies, flowers, vintage ephemera etc.  I will have the basics that you need, you may wish to embellish with some of your own 🙂

  • Vintage papers –  old letter or sheet music, old dress pattern, butterflies, vintage dress frame images.
  • Plain white/cream cotton fabric for the fold over journal about 2 x 42x24cm pieces
  • Plain white-cream cotton fabric for the journal cover 1 x to fit your old book (we will cut to size on the day)
  • Tracing paper
  • Practice pages for face drawings
  • Templates for face practice
