Figures – they look like they should be really difficult to draw…scary in a way!   I used to think that too….until I faced my fears and found it all to be untrue!   In this class I will show you how you can create beautiful emotive figures….and it’s really quite simple, if you follow the steps 🙂

Using this loose style of watercolour, and with scratchy pencil lines, we really capture a quiet emotion in our work.  We use simple yet dynamic poses that convey a sense of who each girl is, you can really feel what they feel.   Anguish, heartache, joy, vitality, it’s all there, each one with her story to tell.

We leave faces out of the mix, and concentrate on the body, the lines, the form, the vulnerability.  You can get just as much emotion, even more, without needing to see the face, the body is the teller of all.

In this class we will start with simple “practice exercises” – the two girls that you see below.  We’ll use 2 A4 sheets of paper and keep it small.  (of course you can to more than 2 practice pieces 🙂

Then we head into our 3 main lessons, on A3 paper, a larger format so we can get to all the details.  We’ll use big brushes, dark pencils, and I will show you each and every step, and how to put it all together.

I have a simple procedure for drawing the figures, and getting all the bits the right size and shape, it’s much simpler than you think, again follow the steps I outline.

Who is this class for?

This class is perfect for beginners and intermediate level artists.  The class incorporates basic watercolour techniques with simple sketching.  It is a work at your own pace class.  You will gain access to 5+ hours of video in which I walk you through each step of the projects.

This is an open ended workshop with no expiration date.  Plus all the videos are downloadable and yours to keep!

What supplies will I need for the class?

Please use what you already have in your collection.   The items below are what I have used in this class.

  • Watercolour paper – 4 sheets at A3 size (29.7x42cm) – I use Arches Cold Pressed
  • Watercolour brushes – medium and large round
  • Watercolours
    • main colours are : Raw Umber, Ultramarine Blue, Carmine Red, Caput Mortum, Paynes Grey (or neutral tint), Black.
    • secondary colours (use what you have similar): Quinacridone Gold, Pink/purple, 2 greens (Chrome Oxide Gr/Olive Green) plus any others you might fancy!
  • White gouache tube of paint (not required but you may want to touch up a bit 🙂 – I only use it in one project.
  • 2b & 8b graphite pencil – I use Mars Lumograph (any type will work)
  • Sharpener and eraser
  • Ruler
  • Paint palette, water jar, paper towels
  • Tracing paper – 5 sheets A4 size (optional)
