There is something about the raw, scratchiness of charcoal and pastels, they really bring such an emotive quality to figurative art. The interpretation of a pose using these soft, yet bold media really imparts a sense of immediacy and sensitivity to the work.

Faces are so expressive, the eyes, mouth etc. all tell a story, but you also find all these emotions in the body, even more so. The tilt of a hip, the angle of the shoulders, head up or down, hunched over or standing tall, the body has a language. Come and join me in this class and learn how to speak it.
This class includes 4 full lessons. We will be using toned paper as a base, and will layer up charcoal and pastels to achieve the finished outcome. These media are so expressive and simple to use, a few strokes here and there, maybe smudge a bit, add some squiggles, it is a joy to create with.

This class includes around 3 hours of video. You will watch the complete project’s from start to finish as I create these 4 figurative works.
Who is this class for?
This class is for both beginner and intermediate level artists. You will need to have some basic drawing skills. The class incorporates basic charcoal and pastels techniques with simple sketching. It is a work at your own pace class. You will gain access to 3+ hours of video in which I walk you through each step of the projects.
This is an open ended workshop with no expiration date. Plus all the videos are downloadable and yours to keep!
You will have access to the combined private FACEBOOK GROUP with others that are also taking my classes, to share your work and get feedback.
So easy, informative classes……will even have the non artist like me producing master pieces. Honestly these classes are great fun, with easy to follow steps to suit all levels of expertise. Be warned very addictive, you won’t be able to stop at just one class. – Kim M.

What supplies will I need for the class?
Please use what you already have in your collection. The items below are what I have used in this class. *Links below are for information purposes – purchase items at a store convenient to you.
- Set of soft pastels, any brand will work fine, if you do not own any at all I recommend Sennelier set of half sticks – the Sennelier Portrait set has great colours
- 3 or 4 pastel pencils – any bright colours will work – I use Faber Castell
- Vine/Willow charcoal stick – a fatter stick will work best (we use it on it’s side)
- Compressed charcoal stick – I use 6B
- Charcoal pencil – I use Generals Peel and Sketch Soft
- Toned paper – I use 2 sheets A3 (12×18″) Kraft paper and 2 sheets Strathmore Toned Grey Mixed Media paper (11×14″). (You could do all 4 lessons on Kraft paper, or any other colour paper/cardstock)
- kneadable eraser
- paper towel with a rough texture
- easel, wet rag
- fixative or sealer (optional – these do not “seal” your work but may help to fix it a little, however the colours will darken so use with care and very lightly!) I use Krylon Fine Art Fixatif 1374
*** I use an easel in this class – a medium sized table mounted one, these lessons are best done vertically due to the pastel dust so I highly recommend getting an easel if you do not have one.
