I love to capture the essence of animals – their energy and soul really shine through when you “talk” to them through the process of drawing and sketching them.  I find the best way to do this is with lovely loose marks and strokes with a bit of “blurring and smudging” here and there.  This class is all about bringing our animals to life and really capturing that personality and letting it shine!

The cost for this class is $54 US.

The freedom that comes from creating with charcoal is hard to resist!  It all started with my little dog Molly, when I sketched her portrait, and from there I was hooked!   This is Molly, posing with her portrait…

In this class we will create 5 drawings of different animals, we use white paper plus some toned grey paper (cheap newsprint) and a piece of cardboard for our frog….you really can use anything to create with charcoal 🙂  I chose these animals, well because they called to me, plus also because this gives you a very good well rounded set of skills to go ahead and draw almost any animal of your choosing.

Vine or willow charcoal is the media we will use the most, plus a good dash of white pastel to highlight our animals features…often times it is all in the eyes, the tinniest speck of highlight really brings out their personality 🙂

Who is this class for?

This is a beginners to intermediate class incorporating basic drawing and charcoal techniques.   You will gain access to around 3.5 hours of video in which I walk you through each step of the process – no sped-up parts, you see everything as I explain it.

You will have access to my combined private FACEBOOK GROUP with others that are also taking my classes to share your work and get feedback.

What supplies will I need for the class?

Please use what you already have in your collection.
The items below are what I have used in this class.

• A4 size paper – you can use any kind you like – in the class I use 225gsm watercolour paper, pale grey newsprint paper and one piece of cardboard from an old box.
• Charcoal
  • vine or willow (assorted sizes)
  • compressed (round)
  • compressed pencil (soft)
  • white charcoal pencil – (I barely used mine so this is optional)
• White soft pastel (I prefer Rembrandt)
• Paper stumps or tortillions
• Eraser
• Large very soft brush (to brush off eraser bits!) – optional
• A4 size tracing paper – optional
• I use an easel in this class – a small table mounted one, these lessons are best done vertically so I highly recommend getting an easel if you do not have one.
• Fixative spray – optional (I do not fix my drawings but you may choose to)
