Description

Luminous soul – classroom is open!

The cost for this class is $44 US.

This class includes three lessons using a variety of mixed media along with oil paint sticks. Each project takes you through step by step as you follow along with my process for creating each piece from beginning to end.

Each project uses a stretched canvas as the base, however you can use a wood board or thick paper if you choose.   I discuss choosing papers and making your collage background incorporating acrylic paints.  We use simple tracing techniques and reference images for drawing our girls faces – you do not need to be an expert and drawing faces to take this class.  We then delve into the world of oil paints and use our oil paint sticks to bring our girl to life.  These sticks are amazing and give a lovely luminous transparent quality to your piece.

Who is this class for?

This is a beginners to intermediate class incorporating basic mixed media techniques and simple sketching.  We will work with oil paint sticks and our fingers to paint, with a small amount of detailed brush work – you will see everything I do in detail so you can confidently follow along.   This is a work at your own pace class.  You will gain access to several hours of video – around 1.5 to 2 hours for each lesson.

This class includes a step by step pdf document of the process we follow.

This is an open ended workshop with no expiration date.  Plus all the videos are downloadable and yours to keep!

You will have access to the private FACEBOOK GROUP with others that are also taking my classes, to share your work, ask questions, and get feedback.

Toni is an amazing teacher. She works at a pace that
is easy to follow.  She explains everything clearly. And
she gives so many details and great tips.   –  Jackie B.

What supplies will I need for the class?

Oil paint sticks – Sennelier (note these are NOT oil pastels, they are oil paint in stick form, however if you have oil pastels they should give a similar result)
(please scroll down to bottom of supplies list for alternative brands)

  • Essential colours (or similar):
003 Transparent medium/blending stick – (this is absolutely essential)
    250 Flesh Ochre
    116 Titanium white
    205 Raw umber
    252 Yellow ochre
690 Madder Lake Pink or 635 Carmine Red (or any other red is fine)

You will need a few other colours such as a blue and a green and maybe a yellow.  Alternatively if you have a set of oil paints you can also mix those in if you don’t have many of the sticks.

  • You will also need:
oil paint in a tube – titanium white
  • Odourless solvent – for cleaning up and wiping off
  • Liquin or Liquil oil paint medium (I use Art Spectrum No.4) – this is used to dilute the oil paint and also speed the drying time, we will use it to “thin down” some of the colours for more detailed work such as on the eyes.
  • Liquitex Matte Gel Medium (or clear gesso)
  • Vintage papers or scrapbook papers (refer below or to pdf for links)
  • Assorted acrylic or craft paints – use whatever brand you have
  • An old credit card for collaging
  • Paint brush for collaging
  • Smaller brush for face details such as eyes and lips
  • Graphite paper for tracing
  • Graphite pencils 2b and 6b or 8b, or any you already have
  • Eraser
  • Stabilo All watersoluble pencil
  • paper tortillion or stump for blending
  • Sealer spray satin or matte finish – for your finished artwork
  • Dorlands wax (optional) or oil based varnish (optional)
  • Substrate to create on – canvas or wood panels

__________

There are 3 alternatives to the Sennelier oil sticks that I know of.
In Australia the Sennelier are really well priced (I get mine here), for some reason in the US they are more expensive.

You can also try:
Shiva Paint sticks (these are the least expensive, though from what I read less creamy in consistency)
Winsor & Newton oil bars
R & F Pigment sticks
