Description
classroom is open – instant access!
Soft pastels are such an expressive media, they are so immediate and really lend themselves to spontaneity! This is a class full of boldness – bold in colour and bold in expression! It incorporates those pop’s of vibrant colour, with the looseness and freedom of soft pastel strokes on the paper. This wonderful expressive medium is such fun to work with, join me in this soft pastel portraits class.
The cost for this 3 lesson class is US$64.
For the lessons in this class you will first learn how to draw the initial faces using soft 8b graphite. We’ll look at the features and shading of the face using some of my own reference drawings, and use those to guide us.
Once we have the basic face and expression drawn in black we will then go through the steps of adding the soft pastels in several layers to complete our works.
Lesson 1
In these lessons we will produce 3 very different faces, using the exact same process for each one. They naturally evolve all on their own just through the process and techniques that we will learn. We’ll really be concentrating on dark and light contrasts.
Lesson 2
Soft pastels can seem a little overwhelming if you haven’t used them before, but I find they are one of the most immediate and expressive of artistic tools to use. A simple swipe here or there creates instant results, and they enable you to maintain a looseness by their very nature.
Lesson 3
What pastels do you need for this class? I recommend you get the softest of soft pastels (some “soft pastels” are actually pretty hard), I mainly use 2 brands – Art Spectrum Extra Soft Pastel Squares (my favourite) and Sennelier half sticks (don’t get the full sticks they are a different formula and more crumbly). The softer the pastels the easier it is to create in the way we do with this class. You do not need my exact colours, a simple set will be enough to start and you can substitute colours.
In these lessons you will follow me step by step as we create our portraits. This class contains just over 3.5 hours of video.
This is an open ended workshop with no expiration date. Plus all the videos are downloadable and yours to keep!
Who is this class for?
This is a beginners to intermediate class incorporating basic drawing and soft pastel techniques. Some basic drawing skills will help you, however all of my classes are created with the beginner in mind so that anyone can follow along the steps.
You will gain access to just over 3.5 hours of video in which I walk you through each step of the process – no sped-up parts, you see everything as I explain it.
You will have access to my combined private FACEBOOK GROUP with others that are also taking my classes to share your work and get feedback.
So easy, informative classes……will even have the non artist like me producing master pieces. Honestly these classes are great fun, with easy to follow steps to suit all levels of expertise. Be warned very addictive, you won’t be able to stop at just one class.

- I use pale blue and pale purple in the first 2 lessons.
- Toned grey paper – I use Strathmore mixed media grey paper size 11 x 14 inch. (This is for lesson 2.)
- A3 size 30x42cm (11.7×16.5 inches) or similar sized – plain smooth coloured cardstock / posterboard (I get mine at the office supply store).
- SOFT PASTELS
- Soft Pastels in various colours (refer to colour swatches)
- – I use: Art Spectrum Extra Soft Squares and Sennelier Half sticks, plus some Jacksons soft pastels.
- Vine / willow charcoal
- 8b graphite pencil – I use Staedtler Lumograph Black.
- Kneadable eraser
- Table top Easel
- Cloth rags for your hands / or paper towel
- Fixative – You only need one kind – my preferred brands are – Krylon Fine Art fixatif 1374, Sennelier Latour soft pastel fixative, and Micador workable fixative.
*** I use an easel in this class – a small table mounted one, these lessons are best done vertically due to the pastel dust so I highly recommend getting a basic easel if you do not have one.
